The Western Mysteries

The Western Mystery Tradition is a modern name used by mystics and occult thinkers in the 19th and 20th centuries for a collection of spiritual teachings and practices in the Western world. The word occult comes from the Latin word occultus, meaning “hidden,” and refers to knowledge about deep questions such as the nature of the Creator, the Universe, and humanity’s place within it. Followers believe that this hidden wisdom, passed down through history, can help people better understand themselves and improve their lives. These teachings encourage curious learners to explore subjects often overlooked in mainstream history, such as ancient rituals, mystical philosophy, and lost civilisations.

Hermetics and Self-Discovery

Hermetics is a spiritual and philosophical tradition that began in the ancient Mediterranean world around the 4th century BCE. It is linked to the legendary teacher Hermes Trismegistus, whose teachings were written down in texts called the Corpus Hermeticum. These writings explore ideas about the All, the Universe, and the human soul through conversations between Hermes and his students. Hermetic ideas influenced later traditions such as Alchemy and Kabbalah, and were studied by Renaissance thinkers like Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. Hermetic philosophy also teaches that humans reflect the structure of the universe, an idea symbolized by Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci, and connected to the belief of Pythagoras that mathematics and geometry reveal the deeper order of creation.

“Nothing stands still - everything is being born, growing, dying - the very instant a thing reaches its height, it begins to decline - the law of rhythm is in constant operations....”

About Western Mysteries

Western Mysteries began as a passion project to share a fascination with the hidden aspects of our shared human history. Based in Liverpool, Jim Bennett is a dedicated teacher committed to providing accessible and enriching adult education. His goal is to explore the history of esoteric subjects with integrity and intellectual curiosity.

Western Mysteries in no way wishes to promote or convert students to Hermetics or any religious group.  Rather, you are encouraged to reflect upon Hermetic principles to either dismiss them or see how they make sense of the world around us and your own life.

There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres".

What our students say

I have taken one of Jim's classes - An Introduction to Wicca and I can honestly say it has changed my life. Jim opened my mind and doors to a whole universe that I'm still very much learning about to this day. Jim is an excellent teacher with a knowledge that I can only describe as otherworldly. I could listen to him for hours.

I really enjoyed the course. The class was well-paced, highly informative and very professional. Jim is very knowledgable and genuinely cares about the progress and understanding of every student. The class is open to discussion and sharing one's own experiences and knowledge. Highly recommend taking the class. Fascinating.
